19/10/2016 An eCPD Webinar: Immunology for Translators and Interpreters by Dr Edward Zanders.
21/09/2016 Lewis Williams (PhD in chemistry) Tutorial: The focus was on the nervous system (CNS and PNS), how information is processed, important structures such as neurons and interneurons, the anatomic nervous system (sympathetic and parasympathetic), and the role of adrenaline, beta-blockers, noradrenaline and acetylcholine.
15/09/2016 Lewis Williams Tutorial: The focus was on the second part of Dr Williams’ (MSci) thesis: ‘Investigations into a Palladium-Catalysed Heterocyclisation-Allylation Reaction and Studies Towards the Validation of DPY-31 as a Novel Target for the Treatment of Parasitic Nematode Infections’ (August 2015). I was given a very basic overview of the infection and how Dr Williams’ laboratory work attempted to synthesise and test a new drug to treat it. I was also given an introduction to GABA and neurotransmitters.
08/09/2016 Lewis Williams Tutorial: The focus was on viruses: what they are, what they look like, viral parameters, the Baltimore Classification, the virus replication cycle, virus types, their effect on the body, HIV, Ebola, antiviral drugs (AZT), protease inhibitors, and an introduction to cytokines and interferons.
31/08/2016 Lewis Williams Tutorial: The focus was on cancer: what it is, its hallmarks, how it kills, what causes it in genetic terms and how it is treated.
23/08/2016 Lewis Williams Tutorial: I was given an introduction to genetics, DNA, RNA, the cell cycle and how a selection of cancer drugs work.
10/08/2016 Lewis Williams Tutorial: The focus was on drug elimination, the function and role of the kidneys and hepatic excretion. An introduction to the cell and its constituents was also given.
03/08/2016 Lewis Williams Tutorial: The focus was on drug metabolism, prodrugs and chirality.
29/07/2016 Lewis Williams Tutorial: The focus was on plasma-protein binding. Further tuition was given on drug distribution.
28/07/2016 An eCPD Webinar: Unpicking an SmPC by Dr Pablo Mugüerza.
27/07/2016 Lewis Williams Tutorial: The focus was on the cardiovascular system, the make-up of blood and drug distribution.
21/07/2016 Lewis Williams Tutorial: The focus was on drug absorption and routes of administration. The importance and definition of bioavailability were discussed, as were the factors affecting bioavailability. I was given a very basic introduction to the anatomy of the gut. Both first-pass metabolism and osmosis were discussed.
19/07/2016 Lewis Williams Tutorial: Some essential pharmacological definitions were discussed. I was also given a basic overview of drug delivery through the concepts of Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism and Excretion (ADME). Absorption and active/passive transport were then discussed in more detail.
14/07/2016 Lewis Williams Tutorial: I was given an overview of the different types of chemical bonds, and an introduction to the role and function of receptors, agonists and antagonists.
